Seven Bridal Hair and Makeup Tips

Feeling clueless about your wedding day hair and makeup?  Well don’t fret; here are a few tips that I’ve learned in my eight years working with hundreds of brides all over Southern California.  As the owner of Beach Bridal Beauty, I have encountered it all and would love to share some of my wisdom so you can avoid any wedding day hair or makeup disasters!

Hire a professional stylist:
This may sound like common sense, but with the financial strain of a wedding, many brides opt to “do it themselves” or hire a friend of a friend who can get them a super good deal.   If you are only focused on your budget this might sound like a good idea, but with all my years of experience styling brides, if there were only one thing I could recommend it would be to hire a professional (and yes, not all stylists are professionals, so choose wisely!).  A few obvious signs of a professional stylist are someone who has a full kit of supplies, is sanitary, and confirms all your wedding day details with a legal contract.  Follow your gut.  If their kit is super dirty or they are difficult to get in contact with, move on!

Always have a preview before your wedding:
If you have the time and budget, definitely schedule a preview appointment with your chosen stylist two to four months before your wedding date.   The preview is a practice run of your wedding day hair and makeup, so it’s the perfect time to work with your stylist and create the perfect wedding day look.  Also, it will give you the opportunity to see how your face reacts to your stylist’s makeup and to see if your hair will stand the test of time.  You don’t want any surprises on your wedding day, so do a trial run so you can ensure your styling runs smoothly!

Don’t go “trendy” go “classic”:
If a bride, aka you, looks back at her wedding pictures ten years later, will she still love how her makeup looks, or will she be appalled because she went with the latest trend?  It’s definitely easy to get caught up in all the unique trends plastered on Facebook and Pinterest, but just remember, your pictures will be displayed in your home for years and years to come, so don’t opt for a look that you might cringe at five or ten years down the road.

Waterproof everything:
No bride wants her makeup to run or smudge, so make sure that all your makeup is waterproof or water resilient.  Your wedding day will be a long day of emotions and activity, so make sure your makeup can handle the stress. Most professional makeup artists will know to use waterproof products, but don’t be afraid to ask and double check!

Your styling should look good in person AND in pictures:
Before you give the final seal of approval with your hair and makeup look, make sure to take several pictures of your finished look in different lighting so you can see how your hair and makeup translates in pictures.   I’ve had so many brides who thought their makeup was too dramatic or their hair was too big, but then after seeing it in pictures, they thought it was just perfect!  Pictures diminish the intensity of makeup and the look of volume in your hair.  Since you are probably going to spend thousands on your photos and will be displaying them for years, you’ll want to make sure you love how your hair and makeup looks in both your pictures and in person.

Have realistic expectations:
This can sometimes be a touchy subject because some ladies have been envisioning looking like their favorite celebrity on their wedding day, but the sad truth is that sometimes it’s impossible to make you look like the latest “it” girl.  Now don’t fret, this doesn’t mean that you don’t have movie star looks, it just means that if you are pale skinned with thin hair, it may be tough for your stylist to transform you into Kim Kardashian.  It’s a great idea to show your stylist inspiration pictures of looks that you like, but remember that they are just that, inspiration, and that your stylist will do their best to create your dream look, but sometimes it’s impossible to do an exact replication.

Don’t try any new beauty regimes right before your wedding date:
Now I know all your lovely ladies can’t wait to get your spray tans, lash extensions and fresh highlights for your wedding day, but please don’t try anything new during the weeks before your wedding day.  There is absolutely nothing worse than getting lash extensions for the first time a week before your wedding and then unexpectedly getting an allergic reaction and end up with red and puffy eyes on your wedding day.  Or imagine, trying a new hairstylist just weeks before your wedding and you hate the haircut they give you.  How do you fix it if your wedding is just days away?  Bottom line, feel free to beautify yourself before your wedding day, but just make sure you are not trying anything new, so you won’t have any catastrophes that you can’t correct before your big day.

Jenks Lake Engagement Session from Blissfully Illuminated Photography

We wanted our engagement photos to capture who we are naturally together: lovers of all things outdoor, and each other of course. One of our favorite mountains to hike is San Gorgonio, so we decided upon the location of Jenks Lake, a small lake on the other side of the mountain. We were SO grateful that our amazing photographer agreed to this longer day of driving and exploring. We were at the lake the day before it opened back up for recreational use (fishing, picnics, etc), so there was not one person in sight! It couldn't have been more perfect.

We bought some vintage gas lamps on Amazon, brought a blanket from home, and flowers I had from testing which flowers I wanted in the wedding, actually. We didn't want it to be too styled or posed, so we kept the props to a minimum and are glad we did! I (Emily) did have my make up done by Jessica of J Hue Makeup, and was so happy with the natural look she did. Abbygale Bedson of Blissfully Illuminated Photography is so talented, creative, and made us feel so comfortable. We feel that we can call her a friend and are so excited for her to capture our wedding! -Emily & Nick

Their love story: Our story goes all the way back to our years of elementary school, believe it or not! We both grew up attending the same elementary and Jr. High school, until high school set us on different paths. Throughout the next 4 years, we would only see each other once, by surprise, at a high school dance where Nick attended with a mutual friend. We love to reminisce on that time, because neither of us would have ever imagined spending forever together, but we had the greatest time that night, getting down to "Apple Bottom Jeans" and being so naturally goofy together. After that fun night, little did we know that our lives would intersect again in 2 years.

We both attended the Cal Poly campuses- Emily at San Luis Obispo and Nick at Pomona (4 hours apart). In December 2008, we ran into each other while Emily was working the Jewelry department at Nordstrom. After a disappointing and failed attempt to get Emily's number, we were finally able to connect. And thus began a friendship that would develop to the greatest trust, companionship, mutual love for God and people, and ultimately a deep and committed love to one another.

How he proposed: Oh my {Emily's} favorite part! There are so many layers to this story, so I will do my best to adequately capture the whole thing. Nick and I knew we wanted to spend forever together as husband and wife. We also both wanted to graduate college first and land jobs after graduation before pursuing wedding plans. So in a nutshell, we had both learned to be patient. As I was struggling with being jealous of other couples moving forward with plans, Nick was up to something big...

He had connected with a friend's dad who was skilled in jewelry design and production, and had all the necessary tools in his home. As Nick and I would look around at rings, he would carefully and so intentionally take note of what we liked, what was unique, special, etc. then let his creative juices flow! From the beginning of November through Christmas of 2013, he would spend late nights and who knows how many hours blow torching, gold spinning, ring molding, diamond placing, and so many other processes I am still learning about! He was MAKING the perfect (and most stunning) symbol of commitment, devotion, and love.

Nick had given me the gift of horseback riding in Big Bear as my Christmas present (something I love doing!). As we were trotting through the mountains, the big question was certainly on my mind! But I wondered how in the world that would even work. Our ride came to an end, and I was thrilled to have the experience, but a bit disappointed that it hadn't happened. After all, I thought I was so clever and knew everything (not even close! Remember, I still have NO idea about the ring). After riding, we went off-roading (another one of our favorite things) in Holcomb Valley. After arriving at a flat valley with a beautiful tree to walk to, we stopped and walked toward the tree together. After seeing that the path was lined with lanterns, and a bench was waiting for us at the end, my heart leaped (and raced). Nick proceeded to share his love and commitment to me, got down on one knee, asked, i don't even think i could verbally say "yes" through the tears, then he sat me down to another surprise... A video of all our closest friends and family, some who I had not seen in years, individually sharing what they admired about us together, why they valued me as a friend, etc. I get chills even thinking about it again! Certainly something I will treasure forever. As if that wasn't enough, he put his hand on my newly beautified left hand,, and said "I have one more thing." He handed me a photo book, documenting the end tire process of creating the beautiful ring on my finger. I was stunned. Shocked. Amazed. And completely in love with a man who would sacrifice so much to make this so special. We were so ecstatic to FINALLY say we were engaged to be MARRIED!

Falkner Winery Engagement Session

Nanette & Reygil chose the Falkner Winery in Temecula because it's where their wedding is going to be held and we love that! They picked out some of the prettiest spots on the grounds and Dennis Roy Coronel did a fabulous job capturing them!

Their love story: We met when I, Nanette was 17 and Reygil 19. I needed a dance partner for my debut (similar to a quinceneria). My mother who was friends with Reygils mom asked her if her son was interested. He was interested! Thank goodness! On our first dance practice it was like it was meant to be for him to be my partner. We laughed and enjoyed our weekly practices together. A few months later he ended up being my Sadie's date & prom date. We were basically official by then. Things didn't end up working out and we went our separate ways, I was heartbroken.

Seven years later I get a myspace message from Reygil. I clearly remember what he wrote and asked me in his message, he said "Hey Nanette! It's been a long time, we should hang out some time!" When I saw that message, my jaw dropped! I got this warm and giggly feeling in me, I was full of butterflies! so of course I responded back, "hey! We should definitely catch up, let me know, call me at this #" Reygil called me back and before we knew it we went out on our first date again. It was like we started off where we ended off.

A few months later we moved in together. We then had our beautiful daughter Elyssa a year and a half later. We are happier than ever!

How he proposed: It was Christmas Day 2013 and Reygol had Ely run to me while I was sitting in the couch watching tv. All of a sudden I see her holding a small box and she goes "here mommy" I looked at the box in shock, because what else comes in small boxes like that!? Well I opened the box and it was a beautiful engagement ring. Reygil got down on his knees and asked me "will you marry me?" And I cried "yes! Finally" hahaha. It was perfect and simple.

About their engagement session: I contacted Dennis from seeing his beautiful work from my friends Instagram. I knew he was just the artist I needed to capture what I wanted. We planned for our shoot to be where our wedding was going to be held, Falkner Winery in Temecula. It was beautiful and rustic, just how I wanted our whole theme to be. We used everything that Falkner Winery had to offer from its building backdrops to their beautiful greenery. It was just amazing!

Charming Morro Bay Engagement Session from Anna Delores Photography

"We wanted to have fun with our engagement shoot, so we incorporated one of our most favorite things... wine! We love going to this little wine bar, Stax, in Morro Bay. We thought it would the perfect place to start with a little vino to loosen us up. Then we walked around on the Embarcadero a bit and took some photos around the boat docks. As the sun started to set, we went down to the bluffs in Morro Bay. We walked down to the beach to get a great view of the rock. Emily, our photographer, was amazing! She took some awesome photos and is so so creative. We really had a great time! Even Mike mentioned how much fun he had that he was not expecting. It really helps when you can laugh with your photographer and feel very comfortable being goofy!" - the couple
